ballet tech® of ohio's founder and director, Claudia Rudolf Barrett, knows from experience that classical training cannot be over-emphasized and that professional, experienced teachers are essential to the safe instruction of students at all age levels

Parents should be careful when choosing a ballet teacher for their children. A poor teacher is not only unable to teach ballet well, but also may cause the students physical harm. To please parents, s/he may force beginners to learn the difficult movements and positions of ballet too soon

For example, a girl should not be taught to dance on pointe (on the toes) until her feet are strong enough. She must first have a few years of training to develop her foot and leg muscles.

.

One of the factors affecting the development of muscular strength and proprioceptive ability is the age at which the child has begun studying ballet.  Although movement classes beginning at age 3-4 may be beneficial for other purposes, no proper ballet training can be accomplished before age 8 (both Cecchetti and Balanchine agreed on this!).  Another factor is the frequency at which the child takes ballet class.  In general children taking ballet class once a week will progress slower than those taking ballet class twice a week.  Those taking four ballet classes a week will progress fastest, but this frequency of class is usually found only in professional schools or academies. .

Short cuts in training can cause serious and even permanent physical damage. Good teachers go slowly. They want to produce good dancers, not to assure parents that their children are unusually gifted.

It’s important to be taught by a qualified faculty using the appropriate/safe equipment such as specialized flooring to avoid injury.

Growing bodies begin with cartilage, and then become bone. Cartilage is basically a more pliable and flexible bone. Consequently, it is essential that a professional who is aware of the physiological and anatomical developmental processes evaluate and oversee dance training.

A student who has reached the necessary developmental level to participate in the appropriate level of training will be a healthier and happier person. ideal body types for dance
